Firefighters rescued two residents from the three-story, wooden-framed building at 258 South 11th St., that was smoking heavily from the basement and third floor windows around 2:40 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said.
The other occupants were able to self-evacuate, and the fire was considered under control about 45 minutes later.
One firefighter sprained a wrist, and approximately 14 residents were displaced, Ambrose said.
The Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit is investigating the cause.
